The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is inviting the public to walk or bike across the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge from 9 am to noon this morning.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to use caution as crews may be continuing to work on the bridge to prepare it for opening. At noon there will be a brief news conference in the middle of the new span. At the conclusion of that event, everyone will be asked to exit the bridge.
Once the bridge is cleared of all pedestrian and bicycle traffic, it will be reopened to vehicular traffic. Vehicles are expected to be allowed on the bridge sometime around 1:00 p.m.
For those who plan to walk the bridge, it is 3,495 feet long (two thirds of a mile), not counting the earthen causeways. Please dress appropriately for the warm weather and bring water or any other refreshments you may need.
Everyone is urged to be safety-minded during this rare opportunity to walk and bike on the bridge. Anyone who plans to walk or bike across the bridge must park off the roadway to assure that highway crews can continue clean-up and finish work. It is important to avoid blocking access to the bridge.
