A two-year-old child was taken to an area hospital after a shooting incident Tuesday night in Sedalia.

According to Kentucky State Police, officers responded along with Mayfield EMS to a home on Kentucky Highway 94 just before 7 pm. They found that the child had been shot, with the bullet entering and exiting its abdomen.

The child's father, 25-year-old Zakary I. Page, said the child was left unsupervised in a room that contained a loaded gun, and he didn't know how the gun discharged.

The child was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital by Air Evac, and reportedly did not have life-threatening injuries. Police say the child is in stable condition and is expected to be released.

State Troopers say the investigation is still in the preliminary stages.

Sedalia Fire Department and Cuba Fire Department also responded to the scene.
