High water from the Ohio River continues to impact portions of the West Kentucky Wildlife Management Area in McCracken and Ballard counties.

Meteorologists say the Ohio River at Cairo will crest at 50 feet on Friday, and the river may not fall below 42 feet until at least January 25. This means the Ballard Wildlife Management area may not open this season. The Ballard County area has been completely closed since January 3.

Due to flooding, the agency is adjusting the number of spots available for the McCracken County area’s open firearms deer hunt scheduled Jan. 18-20. The first 115 hunters who appear at the designated McCracken check-in station from 4 - 8 pm on Friday, and between 4:30 am and 7 pm from Saturday through Monday, will be allowed to participate in the hunt. This represents a reduction of 25 spots from the original limit.

Roads in Tract 6 of the WMA will be closed by signage to prevent damage to roads and to minimize safety hazards for participating hunters.

The Boatwright WMA will remain open through the daily draw, under backwater regulations.

General rules for the shotgun and muzzleloader hunt still apply.

Hunters may contact West Kentucky WMA’s office at 270-488-3233 for additional information about the local conditions.
