It may not be deer season for hunters just yet, but deer season for cars is underway. The official start of autumn is just around the corner, and this is the time of year when your chances of a deer-car collision are highest.

State Farm's annual release of state-by-state odds of hitting a deer puts your chances in Kentucky at 1 in 113, making it slightly less likely this year than last year.

In Illinois, your chances of hitting a deer are 1 in 199, in Tennessee, 1 in 170, and in Missouri, 1 in 120.

The state in which you're most likely to hit a deer is West Virginia, a 1 in 44 chance. Least likely is Hawaii, at 1 in almost 8800.

Officials say you should be particularly alert between dusk and dawn when deer are most active, and that if you see one deer, there are probably several others nearby.
