According to the Murray Police Department, police were called to a parking lot near South 12th Street to check the welfare of a juvenile. Upon arrival, an officer located the juvenile in the rear seat of a vehicle.
The officer approached the driver's
side of the vehicle and made contact with 38-year-old Tara Wieland of
Fargo, North Dakota. While asking for identification, the officer
noticed Wieland attempting to conceal a pistol in her lap by covering
it with her purse.
The officer requested that she place her hands on the
steering wheel. Wieland ignored the command and reportedly tried to reach under her purse. The officer then grabbed
Wieland's arm and was able to remove her from the vehicle, after she
initially tried to drive off. After a brief struggle, the officer was
able to place Wieland into custody without further incident.
Wieland, and another male found in the vehicle, 19-year-old Daniel Carlson of Moorhead, MN, were taken to the Murray Police Department. During the investigation, police learned that Wieland, Carlson, and the juvenile were on their way to Tennessee to kidnap Wieland’s youngest daughter, who is no longer in her custody. Police also learned that the pistol Wieland had was reported stolen out of Moorhead. MN.
Further investigation revealed that while in Murray, the three had broken into some vehicles. Among the items stolen was a credit card, that was reportedly used for a couple of purchases. Carlson and Wieland were placed into custody and transported to the Calloway County Jail.
Wieland was charged with attempted kidnapping, fleeing or evading police, assault, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, endangering the welfare of a minor and theft. Carlson was charged with attempted kidnapping, forgery and theft.
