The mural will be painted on the west side of the old Merit Building, which is now occupied by D&D Shoes, Inc. It will feature a 1940’s-era gentleman in a suit, and it will honor not only Merit Clothing, but Curlee and Andover as well.
The dimensions of the mural will be 37’ x 17’, and an interesting component of this mural project will be the three-dimensional quality that the artist has worked into the design. The mural is scheduled to go up sometime in late April/early May.
The mural is being co-sponsored by First Kentucky Bank and D&D Shoes. The graphic artist for the new mural project is Rudy Holmes, a former Mayfield resident and muralist who now resides in Paducah.
“We are so pleased with this design, and to be able to pay our respect to our local clothing industry roots that have connected so many of our local citizens,” Cantrell said. “I’m sure everyone will want a copy of the mural prints, which will be available later in the spring or early summer. I appreciate the sponsors for working with us on this project, and it’s destined to become another one of our “hidden treasures” very soon.”
An artist’s rendering of the print is being previewed now in the Mayor’s Office at City Hall. Anyone wishing to reserve their prints can contact Cantrell at 251-6251 to get on the list.
