Beginning in 2015, the program has continued to provide employees with an opportunity to not only earn a high school diploma, but to receive upfront college tuition assistance, and the opportunity for those in need to learn English as a second language.
One local McDonald's franchisee has not only created a family business, but a culture of education for his employees. Mike Love is a second generation McDonald's franchisee who owns 10 restaurants throughout western Kentucky and southern Illinois.
Love's father, Clyde Love purchased his first restaurant in 1975. With Mike following in his father's footsteps to become a franchisee in 1986. Mike's late wife, Nanette, worked alongside her husband building their family business until she passed away. He has two sons, one of which is in line to become a third generation McDonald's franchisee.
Just within 2019, employees within Mike's restaurants have received almost $80,000 in college tuition through the Archways program. And if you go back four years into the program, Mike's employees have received nearly $230,000 in college assistance. Mike is passionate about the program, even traveling around to all of his restaurants to help sign up as many employees as possible.
Mike spoke with West Kentucky Star about the program recently, saying, "We've had people that have stayed with us after graduating, and then we've also had people that have gone on to other things. Without that financial burden it really leaves your options pretty open to do whatever you feel is right."
