After the school principal got a complaint, the band director at Lyon County Middle and High School has resigned.

According to Superintendent Russ Tilford, someone complained to Principal Tom Radivonyk about 23-year-old Joshua Scott after a field trip.

Several students were with Scott in a school vehicle, and administrators learned that he may have allowed some inappropriate music to be played, and may have made inappropriate comments to the students.

Tilford said Scott offered his resignation at a Wednesday meeting to discuss the complaint, although nothing that took place was illegal or what Tilford considered abuse or neglect.

"He's just young and made some errors in judgement and failed to uphold the standards of what we expect from our teachers," Tilford said.

Scott was a first-year teacher, right out of college. A substitute is teaching in Scott's place and the district has posted the job opening online.

Here is Superintendent Russ Tilford's statement:

"Mr. Joshua Scott resigned on Wednesday afternoon as teacher and band director for Lyon County Schools after Mr. Radivonyk received reports from parents. The report from parents allege that during a field trip with band students, Mr. Scott allowed for inappropriate music to be played and made inappropriate comments to students. To the best of our knowledge there was nothing that was illegal nor anything that neared the threshold of abuse or neglect. Simply, Mr. Scott erred in judgment and failed to uphold the standard of conduct we expect from our employees.

Temporarily, we have a substitute teacher in the classroom as we arrange for someone to complete the rest of the school year.  We have posted the position and will fill the vacancy for next school year. We expect to have many qualified applicants, allowing us to find the right individual that can elevate our band program to new heights.
