Students from western Kentucky competed in the 2017 U.S. Department of Energy West Kentucky Regional Middle School Science Bowl on Saturday, and Heath Middle School won the championship.

The Heath team, coached by 6th grade science teacher Brandy Roberts, includes Mason Hancock, Jacob Harris, Tylee Haws, Ava Kelly, and Xander Norment.

They will travel to Washington, D.C. April 27 through May 1 to compete in the national event.

Ballard County Middle School took second place. Seventh-grade science teacher Sue Morris coaches the Ballard team, which includes Nathan Fithen, Grace Horn, Dustin Howle, Andy Paul, and Aliza Smith.

The event, Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and held at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah, allowed students to participate in an unique, quick-recall style competition. It also allowed them to be on the campus of a local college and meet community members who have careers in the field of science.
