A Graves County man faces charges after he allegedly chopped down a power pole.

According to the Graves County Sheriff's Office, employees with West Kentucky Rural Electric received a call of a power outage Monday in the 1700 block of Slaughter Road. When they arrived at the scene, the linemen found a power pole lying on the ground.

The resident of the home, 40-year-old Jared Hayes, told workers he chopped the pole down with an ax. The linemen called police, who came and arrested Hayes Tuesday on charges of attempted theft by unlawful taking and criminal mischief.

Hayes allegedly told police he was going to take the transformer off the pole and sell it back to West Kentucky RECC. The linemen told police the pole was still active and hot and could have killed Hayes instantly.

He was lodged in the Graves County Jail.
