A contractor plans to start work on a new bridge to carry KY 276/Blackhawk Road across Long Pond Branch in southernmost Caldwell County this week.

The contractor is moving equipment and materials to the site with the expectation of work starting by the end of the week.

In July 2015, A woman was killed when her car drove across a washed-out culvert after 5 inches of rain along Blackhawk Road near Blue Springs Church.  A temporary culvert was placed at the site, but in July 2016, the temporary culvert washed out after another 4 inches of rain hit the area in about 2 hours.  Since then, Blackhawk Road has remained closed at the site along the Caldwell-Trigg County Line.

A culvert had also washed out at this site in the mid-1960s.

Due to the force of water coming down Long Pond Branch during major storms, KYTC engineers chose to replace the culvert with a new bridge.

Jim Smith Contracting will construct the bridge that has a target completion date of May 15.  Blackhawk Road will remain closed at the site until the new bridge is completed.
