A minor quake that was strong enough for people to feel happened early Friday morning in northwest Tennessee. There have been at least six other quakes that were too minor to be felt over the past several days.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the biggest of the seven quakes was a magnitude 2.9 earthquake that happened at around 3:40 am on Friday with an epicenter near Ridgely, Tennessee, which is about fifteen miles south of the Kentucky state line.
The latest quake comes on the heels of six other tremors within a 24-hour period, on Wednesday and Thursday. The USGS reports a 1.9 at 3:56 pm on Wednesday was epicentered near New Madrid, Missouri, a 1.7 at 11:06 pm Wednesday was epicentered near Manila, Arkansas, a 2.2 at 4;23 am on Thursday, 1.6 at 5:23 pm on Thursday, another 1.6 at 5:57 pm on Thursday, and a 1.8 at 8:13 pm on Thursday, were all epicentered near Ridgely.
The New Madrid network of faults has been particularly active over the past several months. Some quakes have measured above 3.0, but no damage has been reported.
