An Alexander County man has pled guilty to a gun crime in federal court.

United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced that 23-year-old Keithy D. Carter, AKA “Darnell K. Carter,” of Tamms, pled guilty Friday to possession of a firearm by a felon, after a one-count indictment on the same charge.

The U.S. Attorney's office presented evidence at the plea hearing showing that on January 14, Carter was found in possession of a 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol, in Tamms. The gun had recently been used by someone else to commit a homicide in Jackson County.

Based on his previous felony conviction, Carter is prohibited from having a firearm. The offense carries a penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years’ supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.

Carter is currently being held without bond while he waits for a sentencing hearing on December 16.
