Southern Illinois University says campus liquor and drug law violations increased in 2013 while robberies and burglaries decreased.

The Southern Illinoisan reports crime statistics from the school's Public Safety Department show there were 73 arrests for liquor law violations in 2013, up from 33 in 2012. More than 90 arrests were made for drug law violations in 2013. That's 30 more than in 2012.

The school started police liaison and community resource officer programs last year. Sgt. Chad Beights says the increases are attributable to those new initiatives and a proactive enforcement approach.

Burglaries dropped from 64 to 24, and the department reported one robbery. Beights says increased patrols might have contributed to the decreases.

Six sexual assaults were reported in 2013. There were eight reported in 2012 and four in 2011.
