Shawnee Community College officials are exploring a method of using artificial intelligence and virtual reality to enhance their students' learning experience.

They're proposing a new AI initiative called Dreamscape Learn Immersive Learning.

With DSL, students wear a virtual headset and headphones to experience a virtual 360-degree environment. In this augmented reality, learners interact with a real-world environment that has been enhanced with digital elements, and explore a 3D space that has been designed to support learning.

Immersive learning can be used to teach languages, provide vocational training, and enhance learning in many other subjects.

The college said that early data suggest that students in DSL earn 1.5 grade levels higher than in traditional courses. They said employers want students who have experience with AI. They want future employees to be able to adapt to new technologies as they come into the workplace.

Shawnee College said the funding will come from grants and private donations.

They're currently seeking public feedback that will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees. That feedback is being collected until March 14th.

More information about DSL can be found on the Shawnee College  website.
