Severe storms with 70-mile-per-hour winds and repeating heavy rains rolled across southern Illinois and western Kentucky all day long on Wednesday.

The first round of supercells that morning knocked down a number of trees in Calvert City, Fulton County and other isolated locations.

The rest of the day saw more very strong thunderstorms spring up with periods of hail and radar-indicated rotation producing damaging winds.

In Livingston County, downed trees and power lines shut down KY 723 at the north edge of Salem near US 60. Crews spent most of the night clearing a large tree that took down power lines.

Debris washed onto KY 95 in Calvert City overnight, but was cleared by morning.

In southern Illinois, severe damage occurred to the Eagle River Coal terminal building south of Harrisburg. Just to the east in Eldorado, Ferrell Hospital became completely flooded inside the facility as drenching storms moved through. Patients in the hospital had to be transferred to other facilities.

Carbondale reported several flooded streets.

Vienna Grade School had to cancel classes on Thursday because of power issues caused by the storms.

The impending weather Wednesday caused schools to decide to let out early, and most church services that evening were canceled.
