We're all familiar with our typical local winter where most any snow that falls is usually gone in just a few days.

But this year, the National Weather Service in Paducah says we are experiencing one of the longest stretches of consecutive days that a deep snow pack has remained on the ground.

Since the major winter storm came through beginning Jan. 21, much of our region got 6 to 14 inches of snow that has been largely preserved under a dome of Arctic air. Now, according to the weather service, it's been 8 straight days with at least five inches on the ground at Barkley Field and many other counties.

That ties the mark for the second-longest number of consecutive days of that much snow staying on the ground. It also happened in February of 2014.

Paducah's all-time record is not likely to be broken any time soon; in February of 1978, meteorologists say we had deep snow still on the ground for 28 straight days.
