A former employee at the McCracken County Jail has been charged in a recent animal cruelty case.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrested 32-year-old Jayce Bryant of Kevil Thursday after witnesses gave them information that led to Bryant being identified as a person of interest in the case. Deputies said they went to Bryant's home on Wyatt Avenue in Kevil, where he admitted to taping the puppy's snout and legs, then leaving it in the area of Rice Springs and Woodville Road.

Bryant reportedly told investigators the puppy had bitten him before he taped its legs and mouth, and that he intended to let the dog go, but it escaped before he was able to loosen him.

The 6-9 month old black lab and great dane mix puppy was found Tuesday with tape still around its mouth. Investigators said a veterinarian told them the puppy suffered serious physical injury caused by having his muzzle taped shut for an extended period of time.

Bryant was charged with torturing a dog with serious physical injury, a Class D Felony.

McCracken County Jailer David Knight said Bryant's employment was terminated immediately upon his arrest.

"Upon being made aware of the incident and the admission, I immediately terminated his employment and in no way condone what actions have been taken," Knight said.

Sheriff Matt Carter said he is glad the puppy, who has been named "Hero", is recovering.

"We are thankful to have resolved this investigation as quickly as we have and are happy to report that Hero is improving daily," Carter said.
