Collisions between deer and vehicles are rising in Kentucky.
Peak deer movement is again getting underway along Kentucky roadways, and crash data shows 2025 had a seven-year high of 3,411 deer collisions.
According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, deer movement increases during the fall due to mating season beginning and a shift in food sources.
More roadway encounters with deer are common in October, November, and December, as they often travel farther distances.
In 2025, no fatalities were reported due to vehicle crashes with deer, however in 2024, six fatalities were recorded.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges motorists to always wear a seat belt, never swerve to avoid a deer, and to be especially aware when driving during dusk and dawn.
