As part of the preparation for work on Paducah's BUILD Grant project, downtown, archaeological shovel testing will take place beginning Monday on the river side of the floodwall.
The testing is required by the Osage Nation to determine that there are no historical artifacts that could be disturbed during work on the project. It must be completed before bids can be requested for the project. Samples will be taken at 37 individual sites outside the floodwall between Jefferson and Broadway and near the old Executive Inn site.
In 2019, Paducah was granted the $10.4 million BUILD Grant to build a riverboat pier, make improvements between the convention center and the Broadway area outside the floodwall, and make enhancements for transportation in that area.
The city said the work would take about a week and should not affect traffic or access to downtown businesses.
