The Murray State Racers welcomed hall of famer Cameron Payne back to the CFSB Center on Saturday, and raised his jersey into the rafters.
Payne became the 12th Racer in school history to have his jersey retired during Murray State's 81-64 win over the UIC Flames.
Several of Payne's Phoenix Suns teammates and head coach Monty Williams made the drive up from Memphis to share the moment with Payne and his family.
Monday, it's Payne vs. fellow Racer Ja Morant as the Suns play the Grizzlies in Memphis.
MSU's last three All-America point guards now have their numbers retired: Isaiah Canaan (2018), Ja Morant (2020) and Cameron Payne (2023).
In 69 games as a Racer, Payne scored over 1200 points and almost 400 assists. He was the OVC Freshman of the Year, and the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year in the NCAA. He was an All-America selection and entered the NBA draft for 2015. Payne has played 8 seasons in the NBA, currently for the Suns, where he played in the NBA Finals in 2021.
