The Kansas City Chiefs presented renovation concepts for Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday.
Their $800 million plans include new video boards, end zone clubs, expanded parking on the current site of Kauffman Stadium, and new pedestrian bridges. Of that, $300 million will be invested by the Hunt family, owners of the team. The rest of the funds would be raised by a 3/8ths cent sales tax increase in Jackson County, which has not yet been approved.
They said seating will remain mostily intact, with capacity to stay at more than 70,000 seats. They also reported that the underlying structural integrity of the stadium is still good after more than 50 years.
Arrowhead renovations would start in 2027, and be completed by 2030.
The expansion includes the current Kauffman Stadium site, because the Kansas City Royals revealed two weeks ago artist renderings of their new downtown stadium planned in the Crossroads District.
The new ballpark will seat about 34,000 fans, or roughly 3,000 fewer than Kauffman Stadium, and the Royals are hopeful it would be ready for the 2028 season.
Both teams await a vote on the sales tax extension between 2031 and 2070 when it goes before Jackson County voters on April 2. If the vote fails to pass, a similar stadium sales tax cannot be brought before voters for one full year.
