After ESPN broke the story on Friday night, Murray State University confirmed on Saturday evening that Steve Prohm has stepped down as head basketball coach of the Racers.

The word comes after a 16-17 campaign this year, and back-to-back losing seasons in the Missouri Valley.

In this second stint at Murray, Prohm went 45-52 over three seasons and hasn't finished higher than sixth in the Valley.

Assistant coach Brendan Mullins will serve as the acting director of the program while a national search is conducted for the next head coach of Racer basketball.

During Prohm's first run at Murray State from 2011-15, his record was 104-29. The Racers won the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title all four years and reached one NCAA tournament.

That success resulted in him taking the head coaching job at Iowa State, which he guided to the NCAA tournament three times, but then the Cyclones had a winless Big 12 season in 2021.

Prohm returned to Murray State in 2022, but the Racers failed to recapture their previous success.
