Mike Tauchman reached over the fence to take away a would-be game-winning home run and end the game with a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday night.

The play had been preceded by another defensive gem in the ninth, in which Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner and shortstop Dansby Swanson turned a smooth double play when the Cardinals had runners on first and second with no outs.

Patrick Wisdom homered and Trey Mancini had a tiebreaking RBI single to help the Chicago Cubs win their seventh straight game, and move above .500 for the first time since May 6.

Drew Smyly (8-7) allowed just two hits in 4 1/3 effective innings in relief.

It is the Cubs' longest win streak since also winning seven in a row last Sept. 25-Oct. 2.

Reliever Adbert Alzolay got the last four outs for his 12th save in 13 opportunities.
