Chip Caray will join the Cardinals TV broadcast team, The Athletic reported Monday.
Caray, a St. Louis native, is a current broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves since 2005. He was the Cubs’ TV play-by-play voice for seven seasons, from 1998-2004.
Dan McLaughlin was the Cardinals play-by-play TV announcer for 24 years before he and the team parted ways in December after his third DWI arrest.
He is the grandson of former Cardinals broadcaster Harry Caray. Chip was supposed to join his grandfather for “about 50 games” on Cubs broadcasts in 1998, but Harry passed away that February before the two men could work together.
Sources said another strong contender was Seattle Mariners broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith, but he withdrew his name for consideration. Goldsmith went to high school at Principia Upper School, in St. Louis County.
