Zander Carter exploded for 29 points and Ashland Blazer climbed past Calloway County 81-64 in the opening round of the boys Sweet Sixteen state basketball tournament at Rupp Arena on Wednesday night.

The game was much tighter than the final score would indicate. The Tomcats only led 49-46 going into the final frame, after leading 38-32 at the half. But Blazer erupted for 32 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win in front of a Rupp crowd of 9,007.

Calloway benefitted from balanced scoring, with four Lakers in double figures. Jonah Butler set the pace with 23 points, along with 16 from Conner Lockhart, 13 from Luke Armstrong and 11 by Eli Finley.

Calloway County controlled the boards 24-19, but Blazer dominated points in the paint, 42-24.

The Lakers finish with a sparkling 31-4 record. Blazer (24-7) advances to meet Bowling Green (29-6) on Friday.
