Mary Ellen (Small) Jones

Mary Ellen (Small) Jones, 75, of Puryear, TN died peacefully on Monday December 2,2024. She fought an exhausting, brave and courageous battle against illness.

She was born in Washington, IN, on July 11, 1949, to the late John Wesley and Hilda Laura (Himsel) Small who farmed in Ireland, IN during her young life. Her family later moved to Huntingburg, IN. Known as “Mag” to family and friends, she graduated from Huntingburg High School in 1967. She attended the University of Evansville after graduating high school.

Married to her high school sweetheart, Wayne Jones, of Huntingburg, the young couple moved to Murray, KY where Wayne was enrolled in Murray State University.  The couple would celebrate 55 years of marriage on December 28 this year.  They lived in the Murray area for their married life, primarily on Peach Orchard Road where they farmed and owned a veal calf operation. Mag also worked outside of the home at South Central Bell Telephone, PTL and the Calloway County School system.

At home Mag enjoyed gardening, often bringing plants back to life with her tender loving care that she found upon a clearance rack. She enjoyed the outdoors mowing the lawn and raising vegetables in her small garden plot. She was an avid sports fan for all sports and especially partial to the Murray State Racers.
With a tender spot for animals, she often cared for strays that found their way to the farm. The farm animals were friends and family to her,  showing particular partially to her dog Hank and of late her 2 cats Scruffy and Three.

After retirement, Mag and Wayne moved to Puryear, TN purchasing property adjacent to their son Brock.
Always active at church with her church family at South Pleasant Grove UMC,  she was a long time servant and regularly served in the ministry of Soups for the Souls.  She was a supporter of the Dream Factory charity where she once served as an officer of the organization.

Mary Ellen Jones is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband Raymond Wayne Jones; her sons, Beau Matthew (Melissa) of Rutherfordton, NC and Brock Wesley (Lauren) of Puryear, TN. She is also survived by her only sibling, Samuel Wesley Small (Karen) of Cave City, KY.
She leaves behind the grandchildren who she so loved, Molly, Brody, and Braden.  Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Sandra Nicholson (Micheal) of Woodlands, TX and Sharon Feeney (Kevin) of Peachtree Corners, GA along with 6 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Shani Campbell will officiate and entombent will follow in the Murray Memorial Gardens.
