Paducah, KY Lois Lunell Nance, age 97, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, at Baptist Hospital Health in Paducah, KY. She was born in Ballard County on May 2, 1928 to her late parents; Nathan and Mary Burnette Steele.
Lois Nance was a strong, resilient woman, like many of her generation. A widow for 30 years, she was still driving and mowing her own lawn at age 90 and lived alone in her home until she was 95. Each name she was called-Miss Lois, Aunt Nell, Sissy, Grandmom, Gram, and Mom-encapsulated a piece of who she was They represented service to the people she loved, and nothing spelled out her love as much as her cooking and sewing.
Lois loved to read all kinds of books, a habit that showed itself in her elegant letters and sharp sense of humor. She read and studied her Bible every day and was never hesitant to share what she discovered or believed. When she was still able to go to church, she loved nothing more than going to her early morning Sunday school class at Lone Oak Baptist Church. Since being more confined to home, she watched no fewer than three sermons every Sunday.
More than anything, Lois loved to "visit" with family and friends, and she bemoaned the fact that everyone was too busy, plus their phone batteries were always dying before she finished. Not even a salesperson could get in and out of her house without and offer of food and a conversation peppered with the salt and light of Jesus. But her favorite visitors were definitely her great grandchildren, who were blessed to enjoy countless dinners built around Gram's friend chicken and macaroni and cheese.
Lois trusted her Savior without question. If He willed her to stay on this earth, so be it, but she was ready to see Him face-to-face. She got her wish, and though our hearts are sad, they're also full of gratitude for the time we had with her and the love she shared with us.
Lois is survived by a son, Tom Nance (Nancy) of Paducah, KY; two grandchildren, Sherri Wirt (Rusty) of ST. Louis, Mo; and Mark Nance (Sarah) of Raleigh, North Carolina;
four great grandchildren, Samuel Wirt, Star Wirt, Simon Nance and Anna Nance.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Nance, a grandson, Scott Nance; daughter in law, Janey Nance; four brothers, Bob Steele, Rodney Steele, Bill Steele and Paul Steele.
