Robert (John) Bittermann, 81, of Paducah, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Providence Point Healthcare.

Robert was born on December 23, 1943, in Joliet, Illinois, to the late Russell and Kathryn Neth Bittermann. He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1961 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics from Western Illinois University.

In July 1966, Robert joined the United States Army, where he trained as a mortarman. He served two years stationed in Washington, D.C. at Fort Myer, where he worked as a driver for the Deputy Battalion Commander of the Old Guard. During his time there, he often reflected on the many unique and solemn military funerals he witnessed.

Following his military service, Robert began a long and successful career with State Farm Insurance in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1969. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to Vice President in Systems. In his final role, he oversaw approximately 2,200 State Farm programmers and 800 contract workers. His career afforded him the opportunity to travel internationally, including two visits to India.

Robert married Patricia Ann “Trish” Rusnak on October 12, 1968, after meeting her in Canton, Illinois. The couple shared many happy years together and raised two sons, Andrew and Brad, of whom Robert was incredibly proud.

In 2003, Robert met Kay Blessing and relocated to the Paducah/Ledbetter area. Together, they enjoyed traveling, including trips to Europe and several cruises.

A man of unique interests, Robert proudly collected casino player’s cards and had a deep appreciation for games of chance. He often joked about his hobby, saying he had “gambled away most of your inheritance-but had fun doing it.” He quit smoking in 2013 after 50 years and considered that one of his personal milestones.

Robert will be remembered for his sharp wit, adventurous spirit, and zest for life. He lived fully and without regret.

He is survived by his sons, Andrew (Karen) Bittermann of Carmel, Indiana, and Brad (Jo) Bittermann of Las Vegas, Nevada; his girlfriend, Kay Blessing, of Paducah, Kentucky; two brothers, Jim Bittermann of Paris, France, and David Bittermann of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Karla (Roger) Fisher of La Crosse, Wisconsin; and three grandchildren, Trinity Bittermann, Izzy Bittermann, and Varick Bittermann.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to enjoy a good game, share a laugh, and raise a glass in Robert’s honor.
