Maurita Louise Thorndyke Mason, 95, passed away February 24, 2025, at the Arbors at Dogwood Pointe in Milan, Tn. A memorial service will take place at the First United Methodist Church of Milan, Tennessee at 11:00a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025, with visitation an hour before the service. The inurnment will be in Paducah, Kentucky.
Maurita was born in Estherville, Iowa, on August 19, 1929. She was born at home to Josephine and Wilbur Thorndyke and spent her growing up years in the same house at 524 S 10th Street. Maurita graduated from Estherville High School in 1947 and spent a year studying business at Estherville Junior College. She married Loyle M. Mason, of Estherville, in July 1950 and lived for a few months in Hawaii while Loyle was stationed there in the military. They later lived in Spirit Lake, Iowa, moved to Lafayette, Colorado, and returned to Iowa to make their home in Sioux City. During the 34 years Maurita lived there, she worked at Security National Bank as a Student Loan Officer. Maurita enjoyed singing in her church choir. She sang solos for church services, weddings and other special occasions. She was active in Eastern Star.
Retirement found Maurita and Loyle moving to Western Kentucky to enjoy their family, who lived nearby, and fishing on Kentucky Lake. After Loyle’s death in 2007, Maurita moved to Milan, Tennessee to be near her nephew. She resided at Wesley Fountain Place for 16 years and was well loved by all the staff and many residents there. She had been living at the Arbors at Dogwood Pointe since October 2024.
Maurita is survived by one nephew, Craig (Marilyn) Ramsey of Milan, Tennessee, and nieces, Renee (Steve) Brodine of Kearney, Nebraska, Michele Sherrill of Indianapolis, Indiana, Stacy Mason of Davenport, Iowa, Laurie (Kevin) Judge of Long Grove, Iowa, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
Maurita was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and James R. Ramsey, and two nephews, Alan D. Ramsey and Dennis A. Sherrill.
