Lloyd Douglas “Doug” Newsom, aged 75, passed away peacefully at his home in Boaz, Kentucky, on June 23, 2025.
He was born September 25, 1949, in Virgie, Kentucky, to the late Lloyd George and Mary Alice Jones Newsom. A man of quiet strength and deep convictions, Doug dedicated his life to his family, craft, and faith. Doug was a baptized member of the Church of Christ and lived out the teachings of Christ with sincerity, humility, and love, and found joy in God’s creation. He had a gifted touch with his hands and a craftsman’s heart—able to build anything he set his mind to. Whether in the seat of his bulldozer or with a hammer in hand, Doug shaped the world around him. But his greatest joy came in being “Papaw” to his grandchildren. He was an adventure guide, a teacher, and a builder of memories. He created four-wheeler trails through the woods just for them. He taught them to fish and hunt, drive farm equipment, and raise a garden. He built birdhouses, told stories, and made every picnic feel like a holiday.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Wanda Hall Newsom of Boaz, Kentucky; four daughters, Stephanie (Keith) Bartley of Lexington, Kentucky, Bridget (Tim) Mabry of Paducah, Kentucky, Staci (Jeffrey) Mabry of Paducah, Kentucky, and Clara Newsom (Adam Woodring) of Arlington, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Hannah Montgomery, Hannah Mabry, Lauren Patton, Aaron Mabry, Grant Patton, Grace Mabry, Ava Woodring, Sophia Mabry, and Nathanael Mabry; three brothers, Danny (Delores) Newsom of Robinson Creek, Kentucky, Ronald Newsom of Robinson Creek, Kentucky, and Wendell (Connie) Newsom of Berea, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Mabry.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home with Jeffrey Mabry officiating. Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery in Graves County.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until the service hour of 1:00 PM at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home.
