Harvey “Dick” Smith, age 75, of Cypress, Illinois, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024 at the Ray & Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center.

Dick, as he was known to most who knew him, was born on Monday, August 30, 1948, in Karnak, Illinois, to Doyle and Edna Smith. He was the youngest of three children and a graduate of Century High School in Ullin, Illinois. Dick went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. During his studies at SIU, he developed and established his love for history, which he maintained his entire life. He loved bass fishing, and was a founding member of Johnson County Bass Club. He was an avid fan of Minnesota Vikings football and University of Kentucky basketball. Dick enjoyed sports cars, riding his Harley Davidson, a good cigar, a glass of bourbon, and spending time with family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife, Margie Barger Smith, who affectionately called him “Harvey D”. Together they enjoyed almost 53 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, Jeff Smith (Courtney) of Bossier City, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Shepard Smith, Caden Parker, and Ellisyn Campbell; his sisters-in-law, Pearl D. Sterbinsky, Conchita Cotter (Bob) and Rosalinda Ring (Kevin); his brother-in-law, Jim Barger (Rita); several close nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Doyle Smith, Sr., and Edna Louise McDonough Smith; his sisters, Patsy Sue Henson and Jean Housewright.

A memorial visitation is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Paducah.

An urn burial is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Luther Chapel Cemetery in Johnson County, Illinois.
