Gus S. Story passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, October 13, 2023. With him were his sons, Robert and Joseph Story. Born at Riverside Hospital on December 21, 1931 to his late parents Silas and Ruth Story, Gus lived his entire life in Paducah. He was a graduate of the Augusta Tilghman High School class of 1949 and the University of Kentucky class of 1953. In 1952, Gus married his love, Patsy Burnett, by whom he had his three children, Cynthia, Robert, and Joseph. After he graduated from UK in 1953, Gus returned home and joined his mother in running Story Electric Company, founded by his parents in 1925. He and Patsy attended Broadway United Methodist Church where they sang in the choir and he served on the Board of Stewards. Gus was also a member of the Paducah Lions Club where he rose to be third vice president. As a Lion, Gus worked for several years on the Lions Club Telethon of the Stars. Patsy and Gus were on the Board of the Community Concerts Association. Gus also helped plan several class reunions for the ATHS class of 1949. He was honored by the city and state by being named a Duke of Paducah and Kentucky Colonel.
Gus was a gentleman who was known for his kindness and honesty. He believed that you should keep an open mind and treat everyone equally. He and Patsy also enjoyed life. They played the piano, loved to dance, and enjoyed traveling. They believed that travel was important as it broadened horizons as they saw new sights and met new people. They visited Gus’ relatives in Sweden as well as traveling throughout Europe and the U.S.
Gus is survived by his three children, Cynthia Story Bisson (Douglas) of Nashville, Tennessee, Robert Story of Paducah, and Joseph Story of Seattle, Washington, and his three grandsons, Theodore Story and Aaron Story of Paducah, and Richard Bisson of Leland, North Carolina, and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Ruth Story, his wife of 69 years, Patsy Burnett Story, and his daughter in law Patricia Miller Story. The family would like to thank his wonderful caregiver Felicia Dale whom he came to consider as another daughter. The staff at Mercy Hospice also provided attentive care during his last few months.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00pm on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Justin Ramer officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Kenton Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11:00am until the service hour of 12:00pm on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
