Dovie Margaret Haley Jarvis

With a sadness only matched by a lifetime of joy, the family of Dovie Jarvis announces her soul’s peaceful release from this earth into heaven on Sunday, Oct, 30, 2022. Incredibly, Dovie was 98.

Born Dovie Margaret Haley to the late E. Vance Haley, Sr and Martha Ellen Johnson Haley of Corinth, MS,  she was a sister to the late Herschel Haley, E. Vance Haley, Jr & Bobby Neal Haley. She is survived by a sister, Glenda Sue Haley Gough (Don) of Hickory, KY.

On April 14, 1956, Dovie married Graydon Jarvis at Calvert City Baptist Church and together they built a lifetime of memories  - devoted to each other for 49 years before his passing.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Dovie. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness and contentment in her daily activities.

Dovie loved spending time in her yard, and by-passers would often see her mowing in her “uniform” of floppy sun hat, garden gloves, and a long-sleeved shirt. She also loved to tend to her vegetable garden, as well as her beloved cutting garden. As she aged, family members stepped in to “break” her garden and help her plant in the spring, water in the summer, and then dig the tubers in the fall, so that the cycle could continue the following spring. Many have been the recipient on a Sunday afternoon of a home-grown, hand-arranged bouquet from her garden, as she distributed some of the week’s finest blooms for other’s enjoyment.

Dovie also used her God-given talents to “create” -  floral arrangements for the church altar, sketches and paintings which she often gifted, clothing for her girls, and maybe her favorite - costumes. Having saved many of her favorite vintage items which came in handy, she was also known for her fun Halloween outfits. Normally, these creations were “top secret” until her big Oct. 31 reveal.

In 2013 when the county consolidated the school district, she said good-bye to the high school her children graduated from by designing & painting herself a Reidland Greyhound cheerleading outfit. Everyone wondered why she didn’t just borrow a ready-made sweatshirt, but that wasn’t her style - she was a creator. As recently as last year, she joined into the fall fun with a group “silly hat” picture-taking.

Always involved in interesting activities and “plantings,” Dovie worked on The Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during WWII; became a bird watcher, listing the varieties that visited her feeders over winter and creating an annual tally which she saved; designed and stitched Barbie clothes which she sold, and worked at Magnavox winding speaker coils. She was fond of saying “I had rather wear out, than rust out!”

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and one of the earliest congregants of Reidland Baptist Church where she worshipped & participated for over 60 years. During that time, she served on the flower committee, as a SS church secretary, and a teacher for both Sunday School & Vacation Bible School.

Dovie lived in the same house in her beloved community for 65 years.

Her “inheritance from the Lord” included daughters: Cindy Pugh (Mike) and Tamara “Tammy” Garrison, all of Reidland;  grandchildren: Joshua Pugh of Murray, Corey Pugh of Reidland, Daniel Pugh (Andria) of Reidland, and Haley Garrison of Reidland; great-grandchildren: Grayden Pugh, Allison Weeks, Joshua Weeks, Luke Pugh, Hannah Pugh, and Cailyn Bohanon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Reidland Baptist Church with Rev. Rob Ison and Don Gough officiating.  Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
