Robert "Bob" Rydin, age 82, of Metropolis, Illinois, peacefully passed away August 23, 2025.

Robert was born August 30, 1942, to Sven “Victor” Rydin Jr. and Genevive (McCarthy) Rydin. He is survived by his wife, Marcia Rydin; his loving children, Victoria Boncz, Virginia Vermillion, Loushane Randall, Judith Johnson, and Antonia Burpo; and by Patricia Jones and Kimberly Jones, whom he helped raise; his brother, Richard Rydin; his grandchildren, Amber Shepard, Logan Shillington, Marilynn Shillington, Hayliee Kohon, Shawna Kohon, and Nicholas Kohon; and three great-grandchildren, Ember, Johnathan, and Chloe.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Swanson.

Robert lived a life full of adventure, both big and small. He proudly served as a machinist in the U.S. Navy before spending most of his career working for himself as a general contractor. There was nothing he couldn’t fix—often with a little duct tape or caulk. He loved being on the water, gardening (even if he didn’t eat the vegetables), and family camping trips filled with laughter. His grandchildren fondly remember New Year’s Eve “early” countdowns at Grandma and Grandpa’s, a playful tradition that allowed the grandparents to turn in long before the clock struck midnight. Known for his stubbornness and fun-loving humor, he was a collector at heart—coins (pennies especially), old glass bottles, and some oddball treasures. Robert lived on his own terms and left behind stories that will be told for years to come.

In honor of his service, Robert will be laid to rest at sea with the U.S. Navy’s burial at sea program. A celebration of life will be held on September 27, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion, 321 Market St, Metropolis, IL 62960.

The family invites all who knew Robert to come share stories, laughter, and memories as they honor and celebrate his life.
