Ellen Marie (Medlin) Smothers July 26, 1929 – July 30, 2026 Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother passed peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at her home in Paducah, Kentucky after a brief illness. Born Ellen Marie Burlison, she grew up near Galatia, Illinois. She was the only daughter born to Oscar E. Burlison and Mary Elizabeth (Springs) Burlison. She had three brothers; Donald E. Burlison of Galatia, Illinois; as well as Tommy R. Burlison of Galatia, Illinois, and Arthur Burlison of Columbia, Illinois both preceding her in death. Marie married on September 18, 1948, to the late Paul F. Medlin. Over their 34-year marriage, they had four children; Paul L. Medlin (Nacy) of Franklin, TN, Sue E. Wiggins (George) of Marion, Il, Charles F. Medlin (Linda) of Paducah, KY; and was preceded in death by infant son, James E. Medlin. She was proud of each her four grandchildren; Chad Wiggins (Jen), Greg Wiggins (Marion), Lindsey Blaire Medlin and Ellie Medlin (Cody). She adored her Great- Grandchildren as well; Brandon, MaKenna, George, Anne Marie and August. Marie remarried on July 6, 2001, to the late Jack D. Smothers. Marie attended Galatia High School and earned an Illinois license in Cosmetology she operated a Beauty Shop from the 1960’s for more than 40 years. Over her lifetime, she was a beloved friend in her community. She served as a dedicated caregiver to family as they faced end of life illnesses with unyielding compassion and understanding. As a person with strong character and deep personal faith, she never spoke ill of others and looked for the good in all those she met. Her quiet and unassuming nature served her throughout her well-lived life. Our family wishes to extend our sincere gratitude to our mother’s devoted caregiver Beverly. Who made her last days full of laughter and joy; Mercy Hospice of Paducah and dedicated staff who provided our mother professional care with compassion, helping her face her brief end of- life challenge. Each provided her at- home medical management and care that ensured her quality of life and peaceful passing. Our heartfelt thank you goes to: Linda, Wendy B., Susan, Deb, Morgan, Charlotte, Rebecca and Michelle. You each brought the gift of true mercy to a very special lady. Special thanks to Andy Rhoades and his Staff for their respectful advice and assistance. A graveside service will be held Saturday September 5th, 2026, at 11:00 am at Ebenezer Church Cemetery near Galatia, Illinois In lieu of flowers, donations to Ebenezer Church Cemetery Association Fund are welcomed as follows: Ebenezer Church Association, INC.
