Bernice "Laurene" Young, born on September 8, 1942, in Paducah, Kentucky, passed away on September 26, 2025, at Calvert City Nursing and Rehabilitation. She is remembered fondly for her strong spirit, dedication to her community, and the warmth she brought to all those who knew her.
Laurene was a remarkable individual who made significant contributions throughout her life. She was the founder of Lake Chem Credit Union in Marshall County, Kentucky, where she played an instrumental role in supporting the financial needs of her community. A devoted member of her church, Laurene was also a leader in the Awana ministry, guiding and nurturing the faith of the younger generation. Her commitment to service extended beyond her church; she was a dedicated volunteer at Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital, where she passionately devoted her time and energy to helping others.
Laurene is survived by her loving daughters, Lisa Bladon (Mark) of Paducah, Teresa Travis (Donny) of Grand Rivers, and Kathryn "Kathy" Ortt (Eric) of Paducah. She cherished her role as a grandmother and took great pride in her grandchildren: Heather Murt, Jennifer Overby, Maddie Ortt, Dylan Ortt, Collin Travis, Dr. Michael Travis, Hailey Edwards, Tristan Bladon, and Chelsea Bladon. Laurene also delighted in being a great-grandmother to Conner Murt, Chloe Murt, and Willa Overby.
She was preceded in death by E. R. Keeling and Charlene Keeling, the couple who cared for Laurene as their own, and her beloved grandchild, Marissa Travis.
A visitation will be held at Keeling & Goodman Funeral Home in Paducah, Kentucky, on Monday, September 29, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Funeral service will be at 12:00 PM with Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Rosebower Baptist Church Cemetery in Paducah, KY.
Laurene's kindness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her family and community will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
