LCDR Robert Laughlin McAllister

Lieutenant Commander Robert Laughlin McAllister, 71, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away at his home on September 4, 2026.

Robert was born on September 19, 1954, in Covington, Kentucky, to Marjorie and William McAllister. He came from a family with a proud history of military service. He was the son of a United States Army Air Corps World War II veteran and the great-nephew of Dr. Matthew Thornton, the last signer of the Declaration of Independence.

A proud graduate of Boone County High School, Robert went on to attend Eastern Kentucky University, where he participated in the Army ROTC program and was commissioned as an officer on May 9, 1976. While attending Eastern Kentucky University, he completed Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia, earning his jump wings and beginning what would become a distinguished 20-year career of service in both the United States Army and United States Coast Guard.

Robert was selected for an Armor Branch and began his career at Fort Knox, Kentucky, with Combat Support Company, 4th Battalion, 37th Armor, serving as Scout Platoon Leader for a 40-man mechanized scout platoon.

In 1978, Robert was given the opportunity to attend Army Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he graduated at the top of his class and became an Army Aviator. He went on to serve in Korea with the 4/7th Cavalry, 2nd Infantry Division, as an Aero Scout Platoon Commander.

Upon returning from Korea, Robert completed the Armor Officer Advanced Course at Fort Knox before returning to Fort Rucker as an Instructor Pilot and Flight Commander. Among the notable opportunities of his Army career were a nomination for an Australian Exchange Assignment and an invitation to fly “Little Birds" with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

In October 1984, Robert transferred from the United States Army to the United States Coast Guard as a Naval Aviator. His first Coast Guard assignment was at Air Station Houston at Ellington Field, Texas, where he became proficient flying the HH-52A. In March 1989, he was assigned to Coast Guard Air Station Miami, Florida, to fly the RG-8 surveillance aircraft and conduct low-altitude reconnaissance missions.

Robert next served at Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida, where he flew the HH-3. His final assignment took him to Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii, beginning in August 1993, where he flew the HH-65 Dolphin. His Coast Guard service included maritime search and rescue, counter-drug interdiction, law enforcement operations, and out-of-country deployments during the height of the drug trade from South America.

Robert ultimately attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and retired from active duty on August 1, 1996, after more than 20 years of combined service to his country.

His military career was recognized through numerous awards and decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Parachutist Badge, Army Aviator Badge, National Defense Service Ribbon, Coast Guard Special Operations Service Medal with Bronze Star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Coast Guard Unit Commendation with Gold Star, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Secretary’s Outstanding Unit Award, and Coast Guard Bicentennial Unit Commendation Ribbon.

His service to others did not end when he took off the uniform. Following his military retirement, Robert volunteered more than 13 years of his time helping fellow veterans with their claims and assisting with projects throughout his local community.

For all that Robert accomplished during his military career, the role that meant the most was being a husband and father.

Robert was a devoted husband and an extraordinary father. He shared 31 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Robyn Roney McAllister, until her passing in April 2014. Together, they adopted and raised four children: Matthew McAllister, Katie Durrante, Hannah McAllister, and Kristyn McAllister.

In 2016, Robert remarried Celeste McAllister, with whom he shared the later years of his life. They enjoyed taking care of their pets, going to the lake, and fishing.

To his children, Robert was simply the best dad — the dad who showed up. He was there for every game, competition, event, and milestone, whether coaching from the sidelines, cheering them on, or capturing the moments on video. His love for family continued as a father-in-law to Raquan Durrante and grandfather to Moire Durrante, Macklin Durrante, Sire Durrante, Kamryn Durrante, and Thomas Durrante. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy, and he cherished watching them grow and being a part of their lives.

To his children’s friends and many others in the community, he was affectionately known as “Daddy-Bob.” That extended family included the Jones family—Michele, Josh, Jamera, Jeremiah, Jazmyne, Jacobi, and Jaxsyn—who became much more than family friends and were considered extended siblings within the McAllister family. Robert’s home was a second home to them, and they shared countless years, memories, and milestones together.

Robert became a father figure to many, always ready with encouragement, a helping hand, a life lesson, a swimming lesson, or a good laugh. He loved telling stories—whether about his time in the service, his many experiences and adventures, or simply something that would bring those around him together.

Robert also had a lifelong passion for classic cars. He loved searching for the next special car, working to restore them, and sharing that passion with family and friends at national car shows. He appreciated the history, character, and craftsmanship of each vehicle, and his enthusiasm was something he loved passing on to others.

Robert leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind stories to be told, lessons to be carried forward, and countless lives touched by his service, generosity, laughter, and love of family. He was a soldier, aviator, husband, father, grandfather, and friend—but to those who knew him best, he was Dad to four and Daddy-Bob to many.

His presence will continue to live on in the people he loved and in the moments he taught us to cherish. He will be deeply missed by us all.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and William McAllister; his brother, William McAllister; and his wife, Robyn Roney McAllister.

He is survived by his wife, Celeste McAllister; his four children, Matthew McAllister, Katie Durrante, Hannah McAllister, and Kristyn McAllister; his son-in-law, Raquan Durrante; his loving grandchildren, Moire Durrante, Macklin Durrante, Sire Durrante, Kamryn Durrante, and Thomas Durrante; his sister-in-law, Cindy McAllister, his nephew, Brian McAllister, Brian’s wife, Felicia, and their children, Rylan and Haley; his niece, Becky McAllister; and many beloved members of his extended family, both near and far, and countless friends whose lives he touched.
