Darrell Mitchell, born on February 3, 1936, in Almo, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 18, 2023 at his home in New Concord with his family by his side. Darrell was a cherished husband, devoted father and grandfather, as well as a treasured member of the Calloway County community.
Mr. Mitchell attended Almo High School and graduated with the Class of 1955. His commitment to service led him to join the Army, where he dutifully served his country not once, but twice. An avid fisherman, he found joy spending countless nights fishing, often casting his line until the break of dawn. Darrell's professional journey spanned over six decades in the construction business. His expertise and work ethic left a mark on our community with the countless projects he undertook and over 100 houses that he constructed that still stand today in Calloway, Marshall, McCracken and Henry County.
In the last few years after hanging up his tool belt and laying down his hammer, Darrell took a more relaxed approach to life. On most warm Saturday mornings, you could often find him and “his girlfriend” (as he so lovingly nicknamed his wife) at a local auction. At these auctions, he would fill his old truck and trailer with his purchased “treasures” to sell at his pride and joy, the New Concord flea market. Often referred to as “Sanford” by those close to him, in the last few weeks of his life, Darrell spun a few deals from his hospital bed in true Darrell Mitchell business fashion.
Darrell was a man of faith. He was the oldest surviving member of the New Concord Church of Christ. Throughout his life, he served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years.
Above all else, Darrell held his family in the highest regard. His 65-year marriage to his beloved Peggy was a testament to devotion and partnership. He cherished every moment spent with his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tommy, Bobby and Billy Mitchell; a sister, June Cunningham, and a brother-in-law and best friend, Mr. W.T. Patterson.
Those left to cherish many wonderful memories include his loving wife, Mrs. Peggy Patterson Mitchell of New Concord; a daughter, Darra Mitchell Benson of Murray; two grandchildren, Lauren Benson-Rojas (Hector) and William Benson, and girlfriend Sydney Ladd, all of Murray. In addition he leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Linda Patterson of Panama City, FL; a very special niece and nephew, Paige Pope (Tim) of Nashville and Dr. Payton Patterson (Kristy) of Panama City, FL, and his special fishing buddy and nephew, Keith “Wormy” Mitchell, as well as a host of other nieces and nephews that he cherished deeply.
The funeral service honoring the life of Mr. Darrell Mitchell is set for 11 am on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Heritage Chapel of Imes Funeral Home. John Dale, Russ Crosswhite and Ed Davis will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Murray City Cemetery.
