Stephen Dwain Greer, 79, of Benton, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center.

Steve was born on April 13, 1947, in Calvert City to the late Rudy Lee Greer and Mary Hendricks Greer. After graduating from North Marshall High School in 1965, Steve enlisted in the Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. On November 8, 1969, Steve married the love of his life, Joyce Estes Greer, and the couple began their journey through life together.

Earlier in his career, Steve started a business with his friend and began working as a commercial diver for the offshore rigs in Louisiana. In the early 70’s, after briefly living in Louisiana, Steve and his wife began missing home and decided to move back to Kentucky, where he and his brother Keith formed Greer Excavating. He spent many years working as a heavy equipment operator before eventually selling his portion of the business to his brother and moving on to his next business venture. This time, Steve pursued a career that involved two things he was passionate about: his love for cars and spending time with his family. Steve and his son, Shane, started S&S Performance, where he worked as an auto mechanic alongside his son, who handled the autobody repairs. Together, the two spent many years working alongside one another, sharing their love for cars and making countless memories in the shop.

Steve loved spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, or searching for arrowheads and artifacts. His passion for discovering and collecting these treasures eventually led him to become a member of the Lakes Area Archeological Society, where he enjoyed sharing pieces of his collection with fellow members. One of the hobbies Steve cherished most was attending truck pulls with his family. In 1974, he built the first version of his truck, “Super Chevy”. Over the years, he continually rebuilt and reinvented “Super Chevy”, eventually passing the torch to his son, Shane, who proudly carries on the tradition as the truck's current driver. Steve's passion for automobiles extended far beyond the truck pulls. His love for classic cars and hot rods inspired him to build and assemble a personal collection of classic vehicles, which he took great pride in sharing with family, friends, and fellow enthusiasts.

As a man of faith, Steve was a member of Altona Baptist Church. Known for his gift of storytelling, Steve could always captivate a room with his stories, humor, and unforgettable personality. Above all, he treasured his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved making memories with those he loved most.

Steve is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Greer; one son, Shane Greer (Kim) of Benton; one brother, Keith Greer of Calvert City; one sister; Rebecca Irvin (Robert) of Calvert City; two grandchildren, Chase Greer (Maggie) and Chaney Reed (Jacob) both of Benton; two great-grandchildren, Drake Greer and Oaklynn Reed; one great-granddaughter on the way, Stevie Kate Reed, who will proudly carry on his name; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Greer; his sister, Priscilla Gandy; and his parents, Rudy Greer and Mary Greer.
