Mitchell O’Shane Mathis, 74, of Gilbertsville, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2025, at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Lone Oak, Paducah.
Mitchell was born in Highland Park, Michigan, on June 20, 1951. He served as an Operator at Arkema, previously known as Pennwalt, where he eventually retired. As an ordained Minister and Deacon at Pathway Baptist Church, Mitchell dedicated his life to God and to serving others. He was selfless, always ready to lend a hand to those in need, accompanied by a warm smile. One of his cherished ministries was volunteering at Marcella’s Kitchen.
A passionate music lover, Celine Dion was among his favorite artists. He enjoyed playing on the church softball team, where his teammates affectionately nicknamed him “Howie the Hog” for his ball-hogging ways. An avid cyclist, he would embark on impressive 500-mile rides in Wisconsin. Mitchell's knowledge and determination were widely respected, as he seemed capable of tackling any challenge that came his way. Additionally, he collected tools to ensure he was always prepared for whatever task lay ahead.
Mitchell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pamela Hillyer Mathis of Gilbertsville; three daughters, Krista Donald (Matthew) of Dayton, Virginia, Bethany Short of Gilbertsville, and Jerusha Marshall (David) also of Gilbertsville; His mother, Dortha “Dot” Mathis; one brother, Michael O’Shea Mathis (Sonja) of Palma; four grandchildren, Zoe Short, Noah Short, Elijah Donald, and Josiah Donald; and one great grandchild on the way, Kaysen Caldwell.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Rodger Blaine Mathis; and his father, Charles Mathis.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Pathway Baptist Church, 229 W 5th Ave, Calvert City, KY 42029.
A memorial service will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Pathway Baptist Church with Bro. Michael Donald.
