It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lucy Ellen Joyce Owen. Lucy lost her battle with Cancer on December 19th, 2024 surrounded by her husband of 69 years, her girls and family friends all singing hymns together. Born on July 9th, 1936 in Saltillo, Tennessee during a record-breaking heat wave, she was the eldest of three girls, Edna Joyce Butler and Mary Joyce Weyer. Her parents were Mary Bastin Joyce and Woodrow Wilson Joyce. They moved to Gilbertsville, Kentucky where Lucy met the love of her life, her beloved husband, Paul Thomas Owen. He was drafted to the Army, so they moved many times ending at Fort Campbell with the 101st Airborne unit. After his service, they moved to the Owen family farm in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, then to Calvert City, Kentucky.
Out of the kindness of their hearts they adopted two children, Jeffrey Thomas Owen and Paula Joyce Owen Lane, 10 months later, Terrie Lynn Owen Hainsworth came into the world completing the family of their dreams. Lucy had three children, worked for 41 years at Calvert City Lumber Company, went to every ballgame, band practice, baton competition, piano recital and she was scout leaders for all her children. Lucy loved golf, Marshall County Sports of any kind and especially UK Basketball!
Lucy “LuLu” has five Grandchildren: Steven Owen of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jessica Lynn Hainsworth married to Mark Sellers of San Diego, California, David Lawrence Lane of Fort Myers, FL, Rachel Esteline Hainsworth of Lakeland, Florida and Grant Lane of Fort Myers, Florida. And one Great Grandchild, Delaney Meadows Hainsworth Sellers of San Diego, California.
Lucy was known for her strong will and determination, the love of her church, Calvert City United Methodist which they joined on July 10th 1960 and rarely missed church or Sunday school in the 64 years they belonged. Lucy was Secretary and Treasurer, sang in the choir, on countless committees, joined the Tuesday Together Bible Study and Ladies Love to Laugh group. Lucy and Paul volunteered at the “New to You” store.
Lucy faced life’s challenges with courage and strength and always put the needs of others before her own. Her passion for church will continue to resonate in our memories long after her passing. She was clear-eyed about death and excited to finally meet Jesus in Heaven. “Oh, what a Glorious day it will be” she would say. As we grapple with the loss of her physical presence, we find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on!
Lucy Owen, a beacon of kindness and love. You will be forever in our hearts. Love you Mom and I’ll see you again!
Lucy Owen’s funeral will be Friday, December 27th, 2024 at Calvert City United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00am - 1:00pm, 1:00pm service, followed by a procession to her final resting place at Provine Cemetery, then a meal at the church with everyone welcome.
