Evelyn Henson Smith, age 77, of Benton, KY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a lifelong resident of Benton and a faithful member of First Baptist Church. She worked for many years as a construction bookkeeper and was admired for her dedication and attention to detail in her profession.
A proud patriot, Evelyn was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 1084 Auxiliary, honoring the service of her beloved father, James Murel Henson. She was also a member of the Clarks River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), reflecting her deep respect for heritage and history. Evelyn spent over 60 years researching her family’s genealogy. Her work helped preserve generations of family history and ensured that their stories would not be forgotten — a gift she leaves behind for all who follow.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Danny E. Smith; her children, Steven Matthew Henson (Tami) and Cheri Lynne Henson Woodruff; her siblings, Carolyn Holland, Pamelia Warmath (Philip), and Steve Henson (Jean), all of Benton, KY.
Evelyn was a proud and loving grandmother to her grandchildren: La’Tasha Henson Powell (Lucas), Tyler Henson, Daniel Henson (Ashlee), Dakota Woodruff (Chelsea), and Ashli Sandman (Ben); and step-grandchildren: Josh Cavanah, James Cavanah (Lexie), and Elizabeth Cavanah.
Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Tate, Eli, Hensli, and Merrett Powell; Ellie Mae, Toby, and Trent Henson; Karsen and Natalie Henson; Waylon, Reagan, and Moxon Woodruff; Benjamin and Landri Sandman; step-great-grandchildren: Luke and Cora Cavanah, Benson and Brady Tucker; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Murel Henson and Francis Lorene (Jones) Henson, and her great-granddaughter, Audrey Lynn Woodruff.
In accordance with Evelyn’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. Cremation has been chosen, with burial to take place at Price Cemetery in Fairdealing at a later date.
Evelyn will be remembered for her kindness, her commitment to her faith and family, and her unwavering love. Her life was a testament to the strength of a woman devoted to those she loved, and her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
