Darrell Edward Poe, 68, of Mayfield KY, passed away on February 19, 2023 at Baptist Health. He was surrounded by love and his family as he left this world to join his Heavenly Father.
Darrell was one of five children, born on January 28th, 1955 in Dekalb Illinois to the late Wayne and Dorothy Poe. As a young child his family moved to Alabama and then back to Illinois. During these years, his love for farming, animals and classic cars were formed. A love that carried on through his life.
While in Illinois, he met his wife Kathy in 1973 at a graduation party where he knew it was love at first sight. It took a few dates for Kathy to feel the same, but she eventually came around to the idea. They both attended Genoa-Kingston High School and dated long-distance while Kathy attended school and Darrell served in the Navy on the USS Midway overseas. He and Kathy kept in touch and never lost the love between them. Upon his return, they married on February 12, 1977 surrounded by friends and family. In 1980 they had their first child, Darrick. Four years later they welcomed their second child, Nick into the world.
He worked hard his entire life to always provide them with what they needed and he ensured that they felt loved every day. He shared with them his childhood loves of animals and cars, which have been passed on to his grandchildren.
Darrell wore many titles in life. Vietnam Veteran, auto plant worker, truck driver, salesman, small business owner, shade tree mechanic, preacher and little league coach— but his favorite titles were always husband, dad and Gramps. He adored his five grandchildren and though his health provided many roadblocks, he ensured that they too felt loved every day. Being a dad came naturally to Darrell. His endless patience and unconditional love were always his strongest qualities, that his boys now attempt to carry on for their own children.
Life was not always easy for Darrell but his propensity to find the positive in any situation was only rivaled by his ability to fight his way out of the harder sides of life. He was a man of faith who cherished his love for his lord and savior. He was both a lover and a fighter. He loved living life and fought a long and difficult battle over the last 8 years of his life with his health; never saying a word of dismay or self-pity.
His sense of humor will be missed dearly by his family, something that he kept with him until the very end. He never met a stranger and was never shy of any conversation with always a word to add.... Whether you asked or not. When his family would say something to him, he would remind them that (in the words of Mac Davis)— "it is hard to be humble, when you're perfect in every way."
He is survived by his wife Kathy A. Poe; two sons, Darrick E. Poe (Jamie); Nick R. Poe (Amy); five beautiful grandchildren- Nathaniel, Aricka, Paiten, Sydney, and Avery; sister, Diana Heathcock; and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Dorothy Poe; brother David Poe; and sisters, Deborah Allen and Darla Minchew.
His family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ryan Frazine and the staff at Baptist Health for their tremendous care.
His friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate Darrell's life in the way he would want to be remembered - as a loving and caring man who enjoyed life.
