US 60 bridge at Smithland to be demolished Thursday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced Monday demolition of the old US 60 bridge at Smithland will take place Thursday morning.

The explosive demolition will take place at 9 am, with traffic being shut down by 8:30 am.

The demolition contractor has cut key locations on the 92-year-old main span and started placing charges on truss and approach spans.  

The placement of explosives on the approach spans is complete, with the placement of explosives on the steel truss about 25 percent complete.  

Prep work is expected to be complete by noon Wednesday.

Traffic will be allowed to resume as normal around 10:30 am on Thursday.
