A train derailment in Todd County Tuesday morning has resulted in a chemical spill and a shelter in place order for those nearby.

WEKT reports that the derailment is blocking KY 475/Tress Shop Road, in Trenton, and US 41 between Pembroke and Trenton is also shut down.

The roads will be closed for an indefinite time, depending on the clean up.

Todd County Emergency Management Director Ash Groves said that approximately 31 train cars derailed, of which at least two were carrying molten sulfur, and one of those cars is completely disintegrated.

Hopkinsville hazmat crews were called to assist at the scene, and are working to put out the fire and surround the area with dirt to prevent the spread of sulfur.

A shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents in Trenton within a half-mile of the derailment, and those residents and businesses should also turn off their HVAC systems.

The Tiny Town Bingo building at 10020 Russellville Road in Guthrie is being turned into a warming shelter.

Groves said that no injuries have been reported, however the timeline for completing the cleanup remains uncertain.

Governor Andy Beshear released a statement about the derailment and requests all to follow local guidance and local emergency management with the shelter in place order for the City of Trenton.
