This year is on pace to challenge the record for the number of tornadoes in our region for one season.
This week National Weather Service in Paducah posted tornado statistics from their service area for the year so far.
They said that so far the Quad State has seen 59 tornadoes in 2025, already tying with 2024 for the second-most on record. Our greatest season for tornadoes occurred in 2011 with 79.
This year's tornadoes have generally been stronger and have been on the ground longer than previous years.
The report noted that in the past 13 months, this region had 13 EF3+ tornadoes. By comparison, only four EF3+ tornadoes were recorded in the previous decade from 2014 to 2023.
The total miles of tornado tracks this year so far is 567 miles, shattering the annual record of 449.8 miles in 2011.
Of this year's tornadoes tracked from the Paducah office, 24 happened in Missouri, 16 were in Illinois, 12 in Kentucky and 9 in Indiana.
