The National Weather Service in Paducah says there are more potential impacts from Canadian wildfiire smoke today and tonight, before Wednesday's chance for scattered storms.
Sunshine yesterday was heavily filtered by smoke from wildfires in Nova Scotia. We have had a few days over the last month or so where Canadian wildfire smoke has made its way into the area from the far west, but this eastern source may be the most pronounced so far.
People across western Kentucky posted on the National Weather Service Facebook page that they could smell the smoke, and it resulted in burning eyes and coughing for others.
Air quality monitors are showing an increase in particulate matter, and air quality alerts are issued today in the Pennyrile and southwest Indiana.
Along with the haze, low humidity means vegetation continues to dry out and a few fire starts are possible. Fortunately, light surface winds will help to limit the overall fire danger; however, fuels continue to dry out across the area with the lack of appreciable rainfall.
NWS smoke map shows a significant amount on the ground throughout Indiana, southern Illinois and western Kentucky.
