A second man has been arrested in connection with a disturbance at Kentucky Oaks Mall on Wednesday.

Paducah police said Friday 28-year-old Dontrel Muhammad of Paducah was arrested on a warrant charging him with second degree attempted assault after he struck a woman with a bat during a fight outside the mall entrance.

Muhammad and 39-year-old Anthony Williams of Cairo, IL, began arguing in the food court area of the mall.

Williams and his wife left the mall, got into their vehicle and drove around the parking lot. They returned and parked in the roadway in front of the mall entrance.

Williams got out of his vehicle and approached Muhammad and the two got into a physical fight.

During the fight, Muhammad retrieved a baseball bat from his vehicle, prompting Williams to go to his vehicle for a handgun.

At that time, a fight broke out between Williams’ wife and Muhammad’s girlfriend.

While Williams was heading to his vehicle, Muhammad hit Williams’ wife twice with the bat.

Muhammad then turned back toward Williams, who was approaching with a handgun.

Williams attempted to fire, but the gun jammed. He cleared the gun, and fired it at Muhammad over Muhammad’s vehicle, which was occupied by several children.

Williams and his wife got into a vehicle and fled the scene; Muhammad and his girlfriend left in their vehicle.

Officers arrived on scene and interviewed a number of witnesses who were on the sidewalk nearby when the
fight occurred and the shots were fired.

Williams' vehicle was stopped minutes later on Cairo Road at HC Mathis Drive and 14th Street.

Williams’ wife was interviewed, and confirmed that Muhammad did strike her twice with a bat. However, she said she was not injured.

Detectives completed multiple follow-up interviews and a witness canvass and conducted a reconstruction of the shooting.

They located two “strike marks” on the exterior wall near the entrance doors and obtained surveillance video that confirmed witnesses’ accounts of the events.

A warrant was obtained for Muhammad. He was located in the 1300 block of North 13th Street and arrested.

Muhammad was charged with second degree attempted assault.

He was lodged in the McCracken County Detention Center.
