Plans are in place to upgrade the final 21 miles of the Purchase Parkway to become I-69 by the end of 2024.

Governor Beshear announced details during his Team Kentucky update to expand I-69 from Mayfield to the Tennessee line at Fulton.

Drivers will start to see construction signs in December with utility work and clearing brush around the Wingo interchange.

The $33.9 million plan includes modernizing the KY 339 Wingo exit from a cloverleaf to a diamond interchange with extended ramps that meet full interstate standards. There will also be improvements at exits 1 and 2 at Fulton.

General upgrades along the length of the roadway will include guardrails, culverts, and drainage.

When work ramps up in the spring, there will be a 55-mph work zone speed limit with enhanced police presence in areas where crews are working.

Along with ongoing construction to complete a new I-69 Ohio River crossing between Henderson and Evansville, the project through Graves, Hickman and Fulton counties is a major step toward completing I-69 through Kentucky.

I-69 was limited to Michigan and Indiana in the original interstate design of the 1950s. In 2008, Congress designated the Purchase Parkway as Future I-69. Similar projects are underway in Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, with the ultimate goal of a completed interstate from the Canadian border to Mexico, dubbed by proponents as "The NAFTA Superhighway."
